The handheld microphone, just over ten inches long, connects wirelessly (2.4 GHz) to the receiver. The dynamic mic has a unidirectional polar pattern, both of which gives the mic very good background noise rejection. The mic is powered by two AA alkaline batteries (not included) and lasts for about 20 hours. The mic includes a power/pair button and an LED status indicator. You unscrew mic body covering to reveal the battery compartment. Removing the body covering also reveals the mic gain control–the supplied plastic screwdriver can raise or lower the input level, though the factory preset was perfect for me.

Samson Go Mic Mobile Wireless Handheld Mic: Receiver

The receiver is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (included) and is charged by the included AC brick and cable via the USB-mini port. The receiver battery life allows for seven to thirteen hours depending on use. The receiver can connect to a phone or camera body device via two mounting arms which can clamp onto the device and are held in place with a locking screw adjustment on the face of the receiver. The receiver face also includes:

  • A power/pair button
  • A volume control to adjust the level of the audio signal sent to the receiver’s digital and analog outputs
  • A switch to direct the receiver audio output to be either mixed mono or split left and right
  • Channel connection LED indicators
  • A battery level indicator
  • A power indicator
  • An analog output switch.

The analog output switch is used for connecting to a smartphone’s headset input or for connecting the receiver to a camera, mixer, or set of headphones (the receiver can be paired with up to two transmitters). The side of the receiver contains a USB-micro audio output jack, a 3.5mm analog output jack, and a USB-mini charging port.

Samson Go Mic Mobile Wireless Handheld Mic: Receiver Attached to iPhone

I easily attached the receiver to my iPhone and was able to record audio and video with the handheld mic. The audio captured by the mic is very clear. The range of the wireless mic is about 100 feet, line of sight. I was able to capture clear audio even when separated by obstructions, though the audio can be clippy when the mic and receiver are obstructed too much. For example, with the receiver in an upstairs house room audio only became clippy when the mic was taken downstairs and then outside or through several rooms. Overall this microphone system allows you to capture high quality audio especially when you are on travel or otherwise need to record when you are mobile. Ideal users of this mic would be filmmakers, journalists, and podcasters or YouTubers doing interviews or at events. The ability to pair a second mic (sold separately) to the receiver only adds to the system’s utility.
