As always, to learn, grow, and explore, I’m trying a few new things.

A few days ago I posted A Curated List of Science, Technology, Society, Writing, Academia, and Life Links. Since I live and work at the intersection of a number of interesting fields, I thought I would start creating a curated list of Science, Technology, Society, Writing, Academia, and Life Links. We are entering an age of targeted ads, “fake” news, gamified search engines, and polarized social media. But I’m a human and this is my personally curated list of links and commentary–just for you!

Earlier today I mailed out to those on my Being Digital Newsletter email list my Curated List #2, including latest interesting links and commentary on AI, data science, reviews, and more.

Here’s the signup link if you’d like to get in on the next one: Being Digital Newsletter signup page.

This page is also serving as something else I’m trying. I’ve always had a conflict with using social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and others.

Those social media sites are very popular, since they are flashy and easy to use for the average person, but as we know, using those sites isn’t really free–you pay to use those sites by giving up your privacy, since those sites sell your data. As a result, people get confused by fake news and the race-to-the-bottom in terms of types of content that attracts the most attention divides people and in general just reduces common decency and civility in just about everyone.

And as a creator, I never really understand why people want to spend so much time and energy to develop content for someone else’s platform.

So I’ve been working on workflows to make it easier for me to write more often here. This page is essentially a microblog–it’s composed of snippets that I’ll update throughout the day. So this isn’t a typical blog article, but more of a running commentary of interesting events or comments that happen as I go throughout the day.

Kind of like Twitter or Facebook, but on my own website. Others are doing things like this as well, part of the IndieWeb effort–I’ll try to comment on what I’m doing and how it ties with that larger movement in the future.

But for now, here’s my first micropost!

I was out mowing when a big box arrived–I suspect this contains something a company sent me to review!
