The EZVIZ WiFi Security Camera is a convenient WiFi indoor security camera that takes high-quality images, if you can get it to work through your network firewall and don’t mind a few security considerations. The images captured by the camera are very clear and it is nice having full HD quality in such a small camera that is very flexible in its mounting options. It is also nice having the option of capturing images locally on a microSD card, as well as subscribing to their cloud service.

EZVIZ WiFi Security Camera: What Comes in the Box

In the box you get the security camera, USB power brick, micro USB power cable, mounting discs, and user manual. To connect and use the camera you will need to install the free EZVIZ app for iOS or Android The camera connects to your home’s WiFi (2.4GHz) and the app allows you to view images, control capture, connect to your cloud account (if subscribed) and configure your settings and profile (my WiFI network is 802.11n and I paired the camera with an iPad Pro). Unfortunately the app only allows up to a 16 character password, which is a weak security limitation.

The base of the camera includes a built-in magnet, which means you can just mount the camera to any metal surface. The camera connects to the base via a ball joint, which means you can easily change the viewing angle just by twisting and moving the camera. The USB power cable is about 10’ long, which allows you to mount the camera some distance from an outlet. The camera also comes with a metal mounting plate and adhesive mounting stickers so that you can mount the camera on non-metal surfaces as well.

The camera takes HD 1080p images at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The lens is 2.8mm F2.5, with a wide 135 degree viewing angle. The camera has a day/night auto switch and captures infra-red (night vision) up to 7.5m. The camera has a built-in microphone (for Alexa integration) and speaker (so you can speak into the camera app and have your voice be projected through the security camera–the camera supports two-way talking). The dimensions of the camera are 2.28"x5.03"x1.49" and the weight is 120g. The camera can take pictures or video manually (controlled via the EZVIZ app) or based on a motion detection event. Media can be stored locally on a microSD card (up to 128GB, not included) or saved to the cloud if you sign up for a subscription (a free 30-day trial comes with the camera). You are allowed to change the default device password, though the device only allows up to a 12 character password, which is a weak security limitation.

My biggest issue with this camera was that I had trouble installing it when I had my network firewall enabled. The camera must be able to connect to your online account, though the user guide does not indicate which ports you must leave open in your firewall. Thus, unless you are willing to open up your network firewall completely, which is a security weakness, then the camera may not even install. With all the security vulnerabilities in Internet of Things devices, in today’s world device manufacturers need to do better. Finally, note that the parent company is Chinese.

However, if you do not mind the security issues with this device and are comfortable configuring your own network, then for the price this camera is a convenient WiFi security camera that takes clear, full HD images (with night vision), and the camera allows for local or cloud media storage as well as Alexa integration.
