Here are some basic instructions for setting up a SEED lab environment for cybersecurity education:
- Install the VirtualBox virtual machine software (not necessary if you already have VMware).
- Download the desired VM image — here’s the link to SEEDUbuntu12.04.zip (revised in January 2016), and here’s the link to the user manual
- Verify the MD5 checksum of the VM image file (6ec9c429a2f4a9163530ada20f0621dc at the time of this post). Yes, it’s only MD5, but it’s better than nothing.
- After unzipping the VM image, for the most part you can simply follow these instructions.
Once the VM is running, you should see the Ubuntu interface:
Note that with the latest version of VirtualBox, in contrast to the SEED instructions, you can save the state of your VM rather than completely shutting down by selecting the menu VirtualBox VM —> Quit VirtualBox VM:
then select Save State:
