Resolutions, Goals, and Improving Your Craft

kindle fire five slices of death

I made a resolution to myself years ago that I would make a serious effort to pursue and improve my writing.

I’ve always been interested in writing stories and telling tales–hey, maybe I’ll even write a novel one day–but somehow job, career, and family always seemed to take a higher priority. And so no progress was made toward my goal.

There wasn’t enough time left over at the end of the day to . . . → Read More: Resolutions, Goals, and Improving Your Craft

Stonecoast: halfway through a residency

stonecoast mfa game night

A Stonecoast residency is very intense. After five days of catching the bus at 7:45AM each morning and ending programmed activities each evening around 10:00PM or so, not counting extra workshop assignments, catching up on laundry, email, and phone calls to home, the intense work ethic and lack of sleep does take its tole.

So the built-in release valve of a few hours “off” after the first workshop has completed is a . . . → Read More: Stonecoast: halfway through a residency

A Big Boot and weekend reading links 21 January 2011

ll_bean

I’m back from my tangent to Freeport, Maine, home to the above L.L.Bean flagship store. Actually it’s more than just one store – it’s rather like a campus, with entire buildings just for camping and hiking gear, apparel, footwear, outerwear, canoeing, etc.

During the 11″ snowfall that hit when I was in Freeport, the L.L.Bean store was open. In fact, they are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Cause you . . . → Read More: A Big Boot and weekend reading links 21 January 2011

So I got off schedule a little with my reading links due to travel and bad weather. But until things are back on track, below is a dump of links you may find of interest.

Speaking of weather, last night we got 11 inches of snow in Maine. This morning – everything was plowed. Businesses were open on time. Everyone had plowed their driveways. Norton Island Writers Workshop: Departure

cell phone meets water

Saturday was departure day for most of us. One group left *way* early in the morning to catch early flights, while the other group left mid-morning, once Rob returned from dropping off the early group. I was in the second group–the others in my group were driving back to their homes, so they hopped into their cars once we got to Jonesport, while Rob carried me to the Bangor International Airport for my afternoon . . . → Read More: Norton Island Writers Workshop: Departure

Norton Island Writers Workshop: Day 5

norton island trail

Although all the preceding days of the workshop were great, today was a day of big events.

It was our last workshop, and I think everyone submitted some of their best work so far. Besides workshopping everyone’s manuscripts, we also had a lively discussion about publishing, discussing the current state of the industry, the outlook for authors, and how technology is impacting publishers, authors, and readers.

Adding to the magic in the atmosphere . . . → Read More: Norton Island Writers Workshop: Day 5

Norton Island Writers Workshop: Day 4

storm clouds over Norton Island

As I mentioned in the last post, most of us spent yesterday taking a break to explore the island. Well, today saw us return to form as we dove back into our writing. The lecture part of the day focused on how to handle verb tense changes (e.g., narrative present versus the present tense of the verbs) as well as “framing” as a story construction technique. We reverted back to our normal routines of eating, . . . → Read More: Norton Island Writers Workshop: Day 4
